Product Description

The Tentipi Hekla firebox makes it easy to grill, cook or just enjoy the heat and light from an open fire.  Its clever collapsible design means that it takes up very little space when packed.

Indispensable if you are going to build a fire on snow. The legs fold out and can be placed on branches or other support material to keep the fire above the snow.

A fire in a rock ring, or directly on the ground, soon builds up a base of coals. Unburned wood pieces on the outside tend to smolder and produce excess smoke.

Visible smoke contains non-combusted gases. Insufficient combustion gives three negative effects: 1. The degree of efficiency is unsatisfactory. 2. Tar particles in the smoke burn your eyes. 3. The smoke is relatively cold and does not rise so easily.

A Tentipi Hekla firebox solves all these problems in a clever way. Many holes in the bottom provide the fire with sufficient oxygen. This increases the combustion efficiency as well as the heat produced. Therefore, wood added to the fire burns better. The frame around the fire reflects the heat which ignites the wood pieces which would otherwise produce smoke.

Wood fuel use is reduced by 75 percent and there is much less risk for eye burning smoke.

  1. Hekla 7 - “go anywhere firebox” 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Dec 2018

Big fan of adventure camping and Tentipi can not be denied with its world class camping solutions. The Hekla 7 is super lite, goes anywhere, is easy to use, and provides a fantastic fire solution for camping or just a long trek in the woods. Fits easily in any day pack is super durable and sets up and packs down in seconds. Make sure you wear gloves when assembling those as some edges can be a bit sharp. I love mine and also have the Hekla 30 for bigger fire needs. Highly recommended.

  2. An excellent firebox with a few flaws 4 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Nov 2016

This small, lightweight firebox suits those who travel light but need to build cooking fires on wet ground or other substrates (e.g. peat, snow, dry moss/lichen) where an unsupported fire would sink out of sight, put itself out, or risk setting off a brush fire. It also suits those who travel in heavily used areas where wood is scarce (since the firebox allows for small but hot fires with few and small sticks) or fires that leave scars are forbidden. Overall the firebox is excellent. I have two suggestions for improvement, however. First, its stuff sack is too small, as a result of which it takes needlessly long to work the firebox (with its projecting metal edges) into it. Second, the firebox is oiled steel. This means it rusts after use unless oiled again before being stored. It would make more sense to construct it out of stainless steel. But otherwise a fine and handy item for those who need a lightweight firebox.

  3. Easy to set up, very serviceable 4 Star Review

Posted by on 18th Jan 2016

The only bad thing I have to say about this product is that the edges of the metal are quite sharpt. For the price, surely they could have taken the time to deburr those edges and make it safer and more comfortable to handle.

  4. Hard to Set Up 3 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Jul 2015

I used the Hekla 7 for a little over a week in Wyoming and Idaho. Once I got it going it worked well, but I found it difficult to set up. The corners of the box are held together by metal tabs that match up with holes on the adjacent piece of metal. Whenever I would set up the box, these tabs would come out of the hole. I tried bending these a little bit to keep them in place, but when you close up the box, these tabs automatically straighten. I had more success in the tent with a biolite stove, a small, wood fueled camping stove. It was a smaller fire, but still kept the tent warm.

  5. Hekla 7 firebox and Onyx 5 5 Star Review

Posted by on 24th Apr 2014

I have only tested this in my yard, inside and outside my new Onyx 5 tipi, but so far I'm happy with it and looking forward to using it in the tipi when it's actually cold enough (it's April in California right now). I'm pretty sure it will be very useful in snow next winter, in temps around 10 degrees, to take the edge off during the night. Being able to have an open fire in a tipi will be great, and this stove keeps it safer than just a fire on the ground. I did make a fire early one morning to see how the Onyx venting worked and how smoke-free the inside would be (it was fine); also I was concerned about flame near the tipi roof (not a problem). Keeping the fire manageable was easy, also boiling a coffee pot full of water was quick. The top surface is quite functional for holding various size pots and pans.

  6. Innovative product for "Leave No Trace" 4 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Aug 2013

Bought this product after being introduced to it by a friend. Used it for a "Leave No Trace" presentation given to a Boy Scout Troop. Great option is to use it in conjunction with a Nomex fire blanket and a couple of rocks to elevate it and protect the ground even more.
